• Have completed the bachelor's degree either in New Zealand or overseas

INZ specifically states that cross-crediting or recognition of prior learning does not qualify for meeting the full-duration study requirement for this new pathway.

The change may be particularly relevant to students who already have a bachelor's degree and are considering a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand.

The important point is that the bachelor's degree does not necessarily need to have been completed in New Zealand.

According to INZ, an eligible bachelor's degree can have been completed in New Zealand or overseas, and there is no time limit on when the bachelor's degree was awarded.

However, meeting the qualification requirements does not by itself guarantee that a visa will be granted. Applicants must satisfy all applicable immigration requirements.

The duration depends on the qualification and the applicable rules.

For the newly eligible Level 7 Graduate Diploma pathway, INZ states that the Post-Study Work Visa can be issued for the amount of time the student spent studying the Graduate Diploma in New Zealand, up to a maximum of one year.

• Eligible Level 8 Postgraduate Diploma may qualify for a 1-year Post-Study Work Visa
• Eligible Level 9 Master's degree may qualify for a 3-year Post-Study Work Visa

This visa is intended for certain international graduates who do not qualify for a Post-Study Work Visa.

The visa will provide up to 6 months of open work rights, allowing eligible graduates time to look for employment and potentially move into a longer-term work pathway, such as an Accredited Employer Work Visa, where appropriate.

To qualify, applicants generally need to:

• Hold an eligible NZQCF Level 5–7 qualification
• Have studied full-time for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand
• Have completed a qualification that does not make them eligible for a Post-Study Work Visa
• Have at least NZD $5,000 available for support
• Meet relevant health and character requirements
• Apply within the required timeframe after their student visa expires

The Short-Term Graduate Work Visa cannot be extended, and an individual can only be granted this visa once.

Eligible Post-Study Work Visa holders may be able to support visa applications for their partner and dependent children, subject to the applicable requirements.

INZ states that Post-Study Work Visa holders can support their partner and dependent children for visitor, work or student visas where the requirements are met.

The family options are different for the Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, so applicants should not assume that the same family rights apply to both pathways.

Someone who has already held a Post-Study Work Visa is not eligible for another one simply because they complete another qualification.
